How to Let Go of Things (and People) that No Longer Serve You

As we go through seasons of life, our wants and needs change. We grow up, mature, and realize that life is too short to hold on to things, beliefs, and people who bring us down. It is important to check in with yourself on regular basis and make sure that you do not clutter your life with unnecessary resources. When you clear that space, you will become a happier and more content human being.

First step is to look deep inside of yourself.

Connect with your deepest desires. What is it that you want from your life? How would you like your life to look like in 5, 10, 15 years. Now think about present. Are all of the actions you are taking helping you be more aligned and get where you want to be eventually? If the answer is no, take some time and figure out what needs to change.

Next, reflect on the people you are surrounding yourself with?

Are they helping you be the best version of yourself? Do they believe in you? Are they cheering you on? If the answer to any of these questions is “no” then let them go.

Are you holding onto past relationships? Checking on your ex-flame or your bestie turned frenemie? Wondering what could have been, or how could they have moved on? Thinking about the times they have hurt you? The best option is to forgive and release them. There is no reason to waste your precious time dwelling on those feelings. Heal what needs to be healed.

How about your self-limiting beliefs?

Holding on to them will prevent you from reaching your greatest potential Do you create stories in your head about how you think other people perceive you? Do you tell yourself you are not enough (not smart enough, not pretty enough, not funny enough, etc…)? Guess what, those are just stories and they have no merit. However; changing what we believe about ourselves is usually easier said than done. So try to start each morning by looking in the mirror and telling yourself something nice like “I love you”, “You are smart”, “You are beautiful”, “You are enough”. At first it might feel uncomfortable, but eventually those words will become your reality.

Do you tend to dwell on mistakes you have made?

Guess what, we all make them. Some are bigger, some are smaller. What they all have in common is that they are the stepping stones to your future success. Rather than pondering on them and berating yourself, try to learn from them. They have lessons to teach you, so use that as an opportunity to motivate yourself and become more resilient.

At the end of the day, you have the responsibility to yourself to become the best and happiest version of yourself. You only have one shot at life, so make sure you live it to the fullest extent.
